Aries Sun, Capricorn Moon: The Super Soldier and the Spartan Warrior, the Warrior-General and the Locker Room Leader

At its best the Aries/Capricorn will manage to pair the fighting spirit of an Aries Sun with the strategic instincts of a Capricorn Moon to form a Sun/Moon pairing that is thick skinned, self-controlled, highly pragmatic, extremely courageous, business minded, and totally unafraid of confrontation. Of the 144 Sun/Moon pairings, this is one of the best for “true grit and the capacity to battle the elements . . . as well as for anybody who needs to legitimately wage war against the establishment”, to quote astrologer Sue Tompkins. (Source) Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) champion turned film star Gina Carano is an Aries Sun, Capricorn Moon whose capacity to “wage war” and “battle the elements” is completely undisputed at this point. According to astrologers Suzi and Charles Harvey, a metaphoric image for the highest expression of the Aries/Capricorn pairing is, “A young soldier is rewarded by the King for exceptional bravery in the cause of freedom and individual rights.” (Source) It’s hard to imagine a more accurate description of Mrs. Carano than that, both in the very real world of professional cage fighting and the imaginal world of action films. In addition to being “the face of women’s mixed martial arts”, Carano recently made her motion picture debut alongside Michael Douglas as a highly decorated special forces soldier who must display exceptional bravery in her war against the establishment:

According to the Harveys, the strengths of the Aries/Capricorn pairing include, “a powerful mixture of risk-taking and caution; total involvement and courageous commitment”. (Source) This combination will “respect the law but just by a hair’s breath”, they write. (Source) Legendary G-man Elliot Ness, famously portrayed by Kevin Costner in the 1987 film The Untouchables, is also an Aries/Capricorn who displayed “courageous commitment” and “risk-taking” moxie while “respecting the law but only by a hair’s breath” in his fight against organized crime during the 1920s. Frank Serpico – the whistle-blowing NYPD cop portrayed by Al Pacino in the 1973 film Serpico – is also an Aries Sun, Capricorn Moon. (Chart) So too is author Tom Clancy, best known for having penned military thrillers such as The Hunt for Red October, The Sum of all Fears, and Clear and Present Danger. (Chart) Actors do best in roles that line up with their astrological charts. With Elliot Ness, Frank Serpico, and Tom Clancy as some of her Aries/Capricorn astro-twins, Carano is in pretty good company when it comes to projecting as a legitimate action star.

Aries Sun, Capricorn can be as formidable a force in romantic relationships as it is when battling against (or on behalf of) the forces of evil. Astrologer Jacqueline Bigar writes of the the Aries/Capricorn woman, “You are likely to be bold, direct, and animated . . .” (Source) The Harveys advise this pairing to consider toning down it penchant for confrontation when it comes to matters of the heart. If not, “loved ones may easily feel bruised by you . . .” they warn. (Source)

Aries Sun, Capricorn Moon Astro-Twins: Gina Carano, the Undertaker, the B-52

Carano’s most notable contemporary Aries Sun, Capricorn Moon astro-twin is probably professional wrestler Mark Calaway, best known as “The Undertaker”. (Chart) Terry Bolea, aka “Hulk Hogan”, is probably the best known wrestler among fans but it’s Calaway who is easily the most respected by his fellow wrestlers. For Aries/Capricorn, respect with a capital “R” is the currency of the realm more so than just fame or money. (Although no Aries/Capricorn ever threw public acclaim or fat checks out of bed mind you.) Take a look at this fascinating out of character interview With Calaway where he discusses the business and human resource aspects of the wrestling industry to understand just how important respect is to this pairing:

It’s no surprise that Calaway is considered the “Locker Room Leader” and “The General” by his peers as business management is something the Aries Sun, Capricorn Moon individual is a natural at. Astrologer Jefferson Anderson explains why in his 1978 book Sun Sign Moon Sign:

Others respond to what they perceive as great maturity and responsibility, and you are likely to gain much respect and influence among your peers. Those who earn your friendship will probably find themselves lifted to great heights along with you. Loyalty is important to you, and you are not one to forget those who help you reach success.

People with the same Sun/Moon pairing often bear a certain resemblance to each other even if they’re obviously not related by blood. Take a look, for instance, at these screenshots of Carano and Calaway from interviews with MMA correspondent Ariel Helwani of FanHouse.com:

Obviously Carano is a bit easier on the eyes than “The Deadman” himself but astro-twin resemblances are more about the physical ingraining of long term emotional states and behavior patterns than simply looks. In the case of Carano and Calaway, the camera picks up on both a sense of responsibility and a presence of practical formidablity, the exact traits the Aries Sun, Capricorn Moon pairing is known to possess.

Aries/Capricorn is one of the top five combos that you can trust to come up in the clutch at any type of “main event”. Calaway, for instance, has been main-eventing Wrestlemania for nearly 20 years and thus more or less carrying the wrestling industry on his back since Hulk Hogan went into semi-retirement. Similarly, Carano’s last fight in 2011 was the first female main event in MMA pay per view history and thus had riding on it the perceived financial viability of an entire industry. Aries/Capricorn natives who go into law will exhibit the same clutch abilities in the courtroom while those who go into teaching will be able to perform just as admirably within in the most pressure packed classrooms. Those who go into construction or contracting will be able to get absolutely massive jobs completed under the most demanding of deadlines. This pairing can be brash and brute but absolutely nothing will rattle it.

Carano and Calaway have a mutual “main eventing” astro-twin that bears mentioning: the B-52 Stratofortress. Designed to deliver nuclear weapons and first flown by Boeing on April 15th, 1962 the B-52 is an Aries Sun, Capricorn Moon (Chart)

Sure, if the world ever ends in a horrifying nuclear apocalypse there’s an excellent chance the B-52 will have played a major role but let’s not dwell on the negative shall we? The truly amazing thing about the B-52 is that sixty years after its first flight it’s still in service. In fact, according to a recent article at CNet.com, the U.S. Air Force expects the B-52 to be in service until at least the year 2040. (Source) That tells you something about the Aries Sun, Capricorn Moon pairing’s combination of both fighting spirit and staying power.

There does, by the way, seem to be some correlation between this Sun/Moon pairing and a preoccupation with the apocalypse. Al Gore is an Aries/Capricorn best known for his detailed analysis of apocalyptic environmental trends. (Chart) Calaway looks like a stunt-double for one of the four horseman of the apocalypse while Mrs. Carano admitted in a recent interview that she’s been more than a bit preoccupied by the end of the world since her high school years:

For all the fortress type toughness seen throughout Carano’s chart, her North Node (destiny) is in Cancer, the sign of the Great Mother. Cancer is the sign of food and family, nurturing and caring, emotional intelligence and heartfelt tears. This means her destiny is tied up with either literal motherhood or figurative motherhood, nurturing others or nurturing herself. At the very least she’s served as the equivalent of a “God-Mother” to a generation of young women who now have an example of a female who kicks ass (Aries) while exuding class (Capricorn Moon).

29 Degrees Sagittarius: The "Samuel Jackson Point" of the Zodiac?

Sagittarius is the sign of the quests, crusades, and devil-may-care adventures. It’s also the sign most likely to be passionately involved in religious, spiritual, or philosophical pursuits. At it’s most extreme expression, however, Sagittarius is the sign of “Doom’s Super Soldier” who will stop at nothing to achieve its quest, according to astrologer Austin Coppock. (Source)

If Sagittarius is the sign of the quasi-religious philosopher-super soldier then is it any surprise that actor Samuel Jackson, best known for playing a Bible quoting philosopher-hitman in the film Pulp Fiction, is a 29 degrees Sagittarius Sun? (Chart)

There are 30 degrees to each sign, 0-29, with each successive degree correlating to a more concentrated form of that sign’s energy. Twenty nine degrees Sagittarius is thus the most intensely concentrated degree of Sagittarius. Jackson’s wallet in Pulp Fiction is inscribed with the phrase “Bad Mother Fucker” which is basically a synonym for “Doom’s Super Soldier”, the most intensely concentrated expression of Sagittarius energy.

Sagittarius can usually be found on a spiritual quest of some sort. Not coincidentally, Samuel Jackson’s character in Pulp Fiction spends most of the film on a quest for his boss’s suitcase. We never find out for sure what’s in the suitcase but it does shine very brightly when opened, which leads us to suspect there may be some type of spiritual component to whatever is in it.

Like a textbook Sagittarius, Jackson’s character also undergoes something loosely akin to a spiritual awakening from the beginning to the end of the film. As he says to Ringo, the would be hold-up man, in the film’s famous concluding scene, “Normally both your asses would be dead as fried chicken but you happened to pull this shit while I’m in a transitional period.” He also speaks quite loudly, yet another Sagittarius trademark.

Star Trek's Mr. Spock: The Ultimate Aquarius?

Aquarius is the sign of Genius, the Mad Scientist, the Truth Speaker, the Rebel, the Revolutionary, the Exile, the Eccentric. Astrologer Judy Hall writes, “Many Aquarians feel alien on earth, as though home is a long way away, or in a future where humankind is in a better place.” (Source) Actor Leonard Nimoy, best known for playing Mr. Spock on Star Trek, has Venus (style, self-worth, love) in Aquarius on his Midheaven (career). This means his public reputation (the Midheaven) was destined to be characterized by Aquarian themes no matter what specific career path he embarked upon. (Chart)

Like a textbook Aquarius, Nimoy’s space alien alter ego Mr. Spock favored logic and rational detachment to excessively messy emotional entanglements. Spock was also an outsider, an exile among both Vulcans and Humans, but his instinctive understanding of technology and capacity to pull information out of thin air were tremendous assets to the crew.

This scene from the film Star Trek: The Voyage Home captures nicely the modus operandi of an Aquarius Moon: involvement in humanitarian endeavors, engaging in behavior that shocks, taking an opinionated approach to political matters, and even being a bit socially awkward:

Anybody whose raised an Aquarian child can probably relate to Captain Kirk’s reaction of stunned shock upon realizing that Spock had jumped into the whale exhibit at the museum.

Aquarians find it darn near impossible not to speak their truth. Spock, not coincidentally, was unable to tell a lie.

Mars at Zero Degrees Libra: "Revenge, my dear captain, is a dish best served cold. It is very cold in space . . ."

The four Zero Points: 0 degrees Aries, 0 degrees Cancer, 0 degrees Libra, and 0 degrees Capricorn are considered the four most potent, powerful, and explosive degrees of the 360 degrees that comprise the zodiac. (Source)

To illustrate how planets express themselves through the four Zero Points, consider the film Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan. Born (released) May 4th, 1982 the film has Mars at zero degrees Libra. (Natal Chart) Its trailer will give you an idea of the colossal amounts of energy this placement is associated with:

Libra is usually associated with peace and diplomacy but that’s not necessarily the case when it’s Mars in Libra. When Mars is in Libra what you’re looking at is a confrontation (Mars) between equally matched opposites (Libra). When you think Mars in Libra think of “a duel”, be it a duel under the blazing sun of the Western frontier or a duel in the icy coldness of outer space. The duel between Kirk and Khan portrayed in Star Trek is thus a great metaphor for how Mars at 0 degrees Libra will often express itself: an absolutely explosive (Zero Point) confrontation (Mars) between equally matched opposites (Libra).

The Sabian Symbol for 0 Degrees Libra is “A man with a pistol in each hand walks in a barren land, unaware that he is followed by a man holding a sword.” (Source) That’s a pretty good metaphor for the way Mr. Khan stalks Kirk through the barren vastness that is deep space.

Truly great films always have endings that correspond to their North Node, the astrological symbol of a person’s destiny should they choose to accept it. The Wrath of Khan’s North Node is in Cancer, the sign of the Great Mother. At the film’s conclusion the Genesis Device, the ultra powerful terra-forming device Mr. Khan had attempted to weaponize, is used to birth a new planet.

Moon in Capricorn: Symbol of Emotional Needs in the Sign of Integrity and Determination, Brass Tack Reality and Professional Responsiblity

The Moon represents a person’s emotional body, their instinctual nature, their unconscious, their true motivations, the most fundamental part of their psyche. It tells us what a person’s needs are, what type of emotional food the person must have on a regular basis in order to feel themselves. It is loosely analogous to the female or “yin” part of a person’s emotional ecosystem and is considered indicative of what they’re bringing in through the matriarchal line.

Capricorn is the sign of the Prime Minister, the Authority Figure, the Strategist, the Business Man, the General the CEO, and the Tycoon. When a person’s Moon (emotional needs) is in Capricorn their emotions “switch on” during times of austerity. This is why the Moon is considered “in detriment” when in Capricorn. Soul-crushing experiences that would break the spirits of other Moon signs are actually emotionally nourishing to the Capricorn Moon. Arnold Schwarzenegger, for instance, is a Capricorn Moon. Arnold’s abilities as a thespian were never his strong suit and his legacy as governor of California has been nothing short of catastrophic but I will say this about the man: his performance in Terminator 2 is one of the greatest expressions of all that is practical, responsible, and relentlessly determined about the Capricorn Moon. Take note of the first 20 seconds of this clip as his cybernetic alter-ego the T-800 climbs over a series of obstacles just like a Mountain Goat, the animal symbol for Capricorn:

Capricorn is the sign of kept promises so when the Moon is in Capricorn the person is actually nourished by working hard to keep their promises. In Terminator the reprogrammed T-800 portrayed by Arnold has promised to protect a young child and he keeps this promise to his grave. He also keeps his promise to the child that he will not kill anybody, a promise as difficult to keep for a cybernetic killing machine promising to lay off dairy would be for a Cancer Moon.

Capricorn Moons can spend lifetimes learning not to repress their emotions. Even at the end of Terminator 2, Arnold’s cybernetic alter-ego learns the importance humans emotions . “I know now why you cry, but it is something I can never do”, he explains to his human companion before dying. More than a few Capricorn Moons, so reluctant to show their emotions, can relate to that sentiment.

That scene, so painful and poignant to watch, left many audiences of in tears — something a number of Capricorn Moons could stand to let themselves shed every once in a while.

There’s another reason the Moon is considered in her detriment when placed in this all-business sign, one that is not all together pleasant to contemplate. Of the 12 Moon signs, Capricorn is the only one which can shut of its emotions with the ice-cold totality of a cyborg. If Arnold’s articulation of a reprogrammed T-800 in the 1991 installment of the Terminator franchise is an example of everything admirable about the Capricorn Moon then his articulation of the same character in the original 1984 version is an example of all that is potentially problematic about this placement:

Obviously few Capricorn Moons will ever take things to the sociopathic extremes expressed by Arnold but this placement does have a tendency to retreat behind a fortress like wall of bah-humbug as impenetrable as the metal endo-skeleton of the his cybernetic alter-ego.
