Sagittarius is the Traveler, the Truth Seeker, the Scholar-Lecturer, the Philosopher-Prophet, and the Professor of High Adventure. Astrologer Austin Coppock tells us Sagittarius is “Doom’s Super Soldier” who will stop at nothing once possessed by the spirit of a crusade. When a person’s Sun (identity) is in Sagittarius they will eventually become identified with some sort of crusade or adventure, often of a spiritual or philosophical nature. (Source) Actor Samuel Jackson, best known for playing a Bible quoting philosopher-hitman in the film Pulp Fiction, is a Sagittarius Sun. (Chart)
Sagittarius’s next door neighbor is Scorpio, the sign of the Shaman and the Spy, the Hitman and the Detective, the Investment Banker and the Contract Killer, the Criminal Deviant and the Depth Psychologist, the Covert Op and the Deep Cover Cop. When a person’s Moon (emotional needs) is in Scorpio, they feel emotionally nourished by situations of life-and-death intensity. The 1981 cult film Escape from New York, released (born) July 10th, 1981, has its Moon in Scorpio. (Chart) The film stars Kurt Russel as a former special operations soldier sent on a mission to retrieve state secrets so unspeakable we’re kept in the dark about what they pertain to until the film’s shocking final moments:
Escape is, of course, a Hollywood movie but its intensely subterranean atmosphere is a very accurate projection of the situations that a textbook Scorpio Moon will resonate with. The Central Intelligence Agency and the United States Secret Service, for instance, both have their Moons in Scorpio. (Source) Operation Gothic Serpent, the U.S. Army’s 1993 incursion into Somalia later depicted in the film Blackhawk Down, was launched when the Moon was in the early degrees of Scorpio. (Chart)
As you can see from these examples, there is good reason why astrologer Austin Coppock has referred to Scorpio as the sign of “The Death Wish”. (Source)
Sagittarius Sun, Scorpio Moon: The Professor of High Adventure Meets the Bringer of Death and Destruction
Combine the consciousness (Sun) of the “Doom Super Soldier” with the instincts (Moon) of “The Death Wish” and you get a Sun/Moon pairing geared towards passionate involvement in life, the fearless pursuit of its own truth, and a spirit of terrifyingly high stakes adventure. Astrologer Bill Tierney writes of Scorpio/Sagittarius:
This combination needs something vast and all-consuming at which to aim their forces in order to keep their energies from being destructive . . . Scorpio provides the drive and endurance to succeed against all odds, while Sagittarius keeps vision alive, even during the most grueling of times. (Source)
The glyphs for Sagittarius and Scorpio both involve armaments. Sagittarius, the Centaur Archer, is armed with a bow and quiver of flaming arrows. Scorpio, the Dealer of Death, is armed with a wide array of weaponary: the Scorpion’s stinger, the Snake’s venom, and the Eagle’s talons. Martial artist Bruce Lee is a good example of a Sagittarius Sun, Scorpio Moon who expressed this pairing’s capacity for lethality in a responsible manner. (Chart)
Actress Scarlet Johansson, who portrays the uber-deadly “Black Widow” character in the 2012 film The Avengers, is also a Sagittarius Sun, Scorpio Moon. (Chart) While not a professional martial artist like Bruce Lee, she does an excellent job of projecting the Sagittarius Sun, Scorpio Moon native’s potent fighting spirit into the imaginal world of film:
Johansson, by the way, did most of her own stunts for The Avengers. Commenting on her portrayal of the Black Widow character, she stated, “I’ve spent so many months training with our stunt team, and fighting all the other actors, it’s crazy. I do nothing but fight—all the time.” (Source) There’s quite a few Sagittarius Sun, Scorpio Moon individuals out there who can relate to that sentiment. Astrologer Jefferson Anders refers to this pairing as “The Crusader” whose propensity for fighting all the time inevitably draws them to high risk thrills:
. . . you are very independent and prefer to blaze your own trail. Free-spirited and adventurous, you furnish your life with variety and thrills. You’ve got plenty of rebellious fight in you and manage Sagittarius-Scorpios have joined crusades and missions . . . (Source)
This pairing’s penchant for crusades and missions makes it an excellent “bandit for hire”. Billy the Kid, for instance, is a Sagittarius Sun, Scorpio Moon. (Chart) He first came came to national attention when on a mission (crusade?) with “The Regulators”, a group of mercenaries active during the Lincoln County War that exploded across the New Mexico Territory in 1878. (Source)
Many if not most Sagittarius Sun, Scorpio Moon natives will take up arms of one sort or another. If, for instance, Billy the Kid had been a highly educated intellectual he probably would have ended up dueling matters out in the legal, academic, or business worlds with the same degree of fanatical zeal that he brought to the high plains of western frontier. Barack Obama’s former chief of staff Rahm Emmanuel, best known as “Rahmbo” for his take no prisoners approach to political warfare, is a Sagittarius Sun, Scorpio Moon. (Chart)
The cold-hearted tactics Emmanuel has been known to employ in the pursuit of his political objectives are reminiscent of the ruthless methods Billy the Kid employed as a member of The Regulators. (Source) During his time as Barack Obama’s chief of staff, Emmanuel was often referred to as “Obama’s Enforcer” which is another way of saying “Obama’s Regulator” or “Obama’s Avenger”.
Fortunately, not all Sagittarius Sun, Scorpio Moon natives are as ruthlessly career minded as Mr. Emmanuel. South African anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko, is a Sagittarius Sun, Scorpio Moon. (Chart) Portrayed by actor Denzel Washington in the 1987 film Cry Freedom, it was Biko who coined the phrase “Black is beautiful”. He too was a Regulator or Enforcer except what Biko was enforcing was his people’s self-respect and right to self-determination.
Biko died at age 30 from massive injuries to the head sustained while in the custody of the South African police. Like many Sagittarius Sun, Scorpio Moon individuals Biko was willing to die if it meant the advancement of the righteous cause for which he was fighting.
Considered the most intuitively shrewd of the twelve signs, Cancer perceives shifting tides of emotion as accurately as its animal symbol the crab perceives shifting tides of the ocean. This is why you’ll find a disproportionate number of Cancers in professions such as counseling and care-taking. When a person’s Sun (identity) is in Cancer they will to some degree be identified with their emotional intelligence.
Libra, sitting 90 degrees away from Cancer, is considered the most interpersonal of signs. It’s associated with fairness, elegance, civility, sociability, companionability, and excels at maintaining one-to-one partnerships. When a person’s Moon (emotional needs) is in Libra the feel emotionally nourished when doing things with another person, whether in the romantic or professional contexts.
Of the 144 Sun/Moon pairings, the Cancer Sun, Libra Moon pairing is one of the most socially aware as it combines the emotional intelligence of a Cancer Sun with the interpersonal instincts of a Libra Moon. It’s usually quite stylish, attuned to harmony, and in possession of a smooth, understated brand of sociability. New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, for instance, is a Cancer Sun, Libra Moon whose appearance in a 2001 VISA commercial captures nicely the smooth, stylish, and oh-so-socially suave ways of this pairing. (Chart)
Jeter has graced the covers of GQ, Vanity Fair, and dozens of other fashion magazines. Exuding the natural social confidence the Cancer Sun, Libra Moon native is known for, he was a perfect fit for the Gillette company’s 2008 “Staying Alive” campaign alongside golfer Tiger Woods, whose presence now only serves to highlight Jeter’s gentlemanly demeanor:
The combination of an emotionally sensitive Cancer Sun and a highly social Libra Moon make for a Sun/Moon pairing that is superb at maintaining its poise even in tense situations that could easily escalate out of hand. Consider, for instance, this this video in which Jeter and his lady friend are harassed by the paparrazzi outside a cafe. The photographer is clearly trying to antagonize Jeter (“Why haven’t you married her? Why aren’t you at spring training already?”, he asks) but Jeter responds by gracefully (Libra) diffusing the situation with down-home Cancerian question about the photographer’s home:
At age 37, Jeter is closer to the end of his playing days than he is their beginning. So what comes after baseball? In a 2008 interview with Men’s Health, Jeter expressed interest in owning a major league baseball team someday. That seems a fitting post-career choice for Jeter as Cancer is considered the most financially shrewd of signs while naturally sociable Libra excels at relating to its employees. Heading up an organization as large and loaded with out-sized egos as a major league baseball team just so happens to be the darn near ideal job for Cancer Sun, Libra Moon individual. Of the 144 Sun/Moon pairings this is probably the best one at smoothing out interpersonal conflicts.
Owning a baseball team is certainly an ambitious goal but Jeter may want to consider setting his aims even higher. His North Node (destiny) is in Sagittarius, the sign of far ranging adventures and long distance travels. Curiously enough, the Apollo-Soyuz test project launched (born) July 15th, 1975 is also a Cancer Sun, Libra Moon with its North Node in Sagittarius. (Chart) The first joint space mission between the US and the USSR, the Apollo-Soyuz project is a great example of how smooth and socially diplomatic Cancer/Libra can be when operating when on the world stage:
The joint space mission between the U.S. and U.S.S.R. has some thematic similarities to the maiden voyage of the German luxury vessel The Von Steuben. The subject of a fascinating 2005 article in National Geographic magazine, the Von Steuben was the first German passenger liner to enter New York Harbor following the cessation of World War I. Using its launch date as its date of birth, the Von Steuben is also a Cancer Sun, Libra Moon. (Chart) The epitome of both high class style and cozy comfort for its era, it too was a symbol of post-war peace.
Now you can understand why even after 20 years under the spotlight in the pressure cooker that is the New York City media-celebrity complex it’s darn near impossible to find anybody who has anything bad to say about Derek Jeter. At its best the Cancer Sun, Libra Moon individual is as good keeping the peace as they are at looking stylish.
The Sun represents the conscious while the Moon represents the unconscious. Just as with an iceberg and its tip, what lays below (unconscious) is far more powerful than what lays above (conscious). Paying somebody a compliment based on their Sun sign is nice but if you really want them to feel good, compliment them based on their Moon sign.
Consider, for instance, how you might compliment a Capricorn Sun, Scorpio Moon individual. If you’re only using Sun sign astrology, you might think to mention various traits Capricorn is known for: how classy their outfit looks, how their model of automobile has a peerless reputation, how hard they must have worked to be featured in the business section of the local paper, or how they’re looking younger as they get older. (Capricorn is known the sign of reverse aging.) Any of those compliments will have a nice effect on the person by way of their Sun sign but if you really wanted to connect you need to reach their Moon. When the Moon is in the Scorpio, the person will emotionally “switch on” when they feel profoundly soulful, powerful, potent, or intimidating.
To illustrate: Watch how this interviewer at the 2009 Comic Con manages to compliment actress Jane Badler by mentioning how intimidated he is by her. She lights up, albeit in stealthily Scorpionic fashion, and from there the interview unfolds fabulously. Badler, who is best known for portraying soul-bending super-villainess Diana in the V franchise, is a Capricorn Sun, Scorpio Moon. (Chart)
Did you catch the line, “All the power comes from your eyes, you must have ability to reveal everything with your eyes.” A google search for “Scorpio Eyes” will return numerous articles about the power of this sign’s eyes. The silent but powerful (even deadly) gaze is one of Scorpio’s trademarks.
While some Scorpios will kill you with the potency of their deadly gaze, others will use the potency of sex itself, in some cases quite literally. Actress Famke Janssen, for instance, is a both a Scorpio Sun and a Scorpio Moon. (Chart) She is best known for portraying “Xenia Onatopp”, a James Bond villainess who killed men between her legs:
Each of the twelve signs has its own sexual modus operandi but it’s Scorpio that is most associated with the actual sexual principal itself. This is why, according to astrologer Phyllis Mitz, “A strong sexual vibe between you and Scorpio is by far the best way to capture their attention.” (Source) Consider, for instance, how well talk show host Conan O’Brien’s interview with Mrs. Janssen went once she had him locked between her legs on the top of his desk. (No joke) Fast forward to 1:12:
A bit extreme but that’s the double Scorpio for you. According to astrologer Jefferson Anderson this is the pairing of “The Extremist”. (Source)
A person’s Moon sign also tells us what they would like to be known for. Actor Mark Wahlberg, whose first major role was 1970s porn star “Dirk Diggler”, is a Gemini Sun, Scorpio Moon. (Chart) In the dedication of his book Marky Mark, Wahlberg writes in the preface that “I wanna dedicate this book to my dick”. (Source) That he would make such a dedication is no coincidence given his Scorpio Moon. In medical astrology, Scorpio rules the genitals.
However you choose to compliment your Scorpio Moon above all else make sure you are genuine. This sign has a built in bullshit detector that makes the CIA’s latest surveillance gadgetry look like a pile of pez dispensers.
