Libra Sun, Capricorn Moon: The Lawyer, the Client, and the Player-President

(Image: Bobby Seale circa 1971, via Wikimedia)

Libra is the Lover, the Artist, the Peacemaker, the Diplomat, the Statesmen, the Counselor, and the Art Collector. This is the sign most associated with fairness, elegance, civility, beauty, aesthetics, and social harmony, as well as being considered the sign of marriage and 1-to-1 partnerships. Known for its natural sense of style, Libra is the sign most likely to have a walk-in closet for its elegantly tailored wardrobe and a bottle of Chanel #5 on its dresser drawer. Don Cornelius, the founder and producer of the television show Soul Train, is a Libra Sun who represented well the stylish ways and smooth sociability of this diplomatic sign. (Chart)

Libra is symbolized as the scales of justice which must be continually balanced. This is why you’ll find a disproportionate number of famous lawyers or justice-seekers born under this sign. Johhnie Cochran and John Lennon, for instance, are both Libra Suns.

Capricorn, sitting 90 degrees from Libra, is the sign of the Chief Executive, the Prime Minister, the Authority Figure, the Strategist, the Tycoon, and the Public Administrator. When a person’s Moon (emotional needs) is in Capricorn they are emotionally nourished by endeavors that require long term planning, strategic decision making, and near superhuman levels of self-discipline. It’s for this reason a disproportionate number of both army generals and leading men have their Moons in Capricorn. George Patton, George Clooney, Norman Schwarzkopf, Napolean Bonaparte, Lucille Ball, and the Whole Foods Corporation are all Capricorn Moons who have represented this lunar placement’s capacity for hoof-busting hard work and aptitude for the building of empires.

Capricorn and Libra form what’s known as a “square” aspect. Signs that square each other tend to knock heads as the goals, values, talents, and fears of each are inherently in conflict with the other. Consider, for instance, the differences between the textbook Libra and the textbook Capricorn. Libra values diplomacy and partnership while Capricorn values status and achievement. Libra’s demeanor is friendly and sociable while Capricorn’s is all business, no-nonsense. Libra wants to go out for a romantic night at the theater, Capricorn feels obligated to stay late at the office. Libra’s big challenge is being too passive, Capricorn’s big challenge is working too damn much. Libra fears being alone, Capricorn fears being poverty-stricken.

Libra Sun, Capricorn Moon: Social Savvy Meets Business Savvy

Now the two of them do have some things in common. They both, for instance, love designer labels. Libra Sun loves them because they make him look good, Capricorn Moon loves them because they indicate she’s achieved the success necessary to afford them.[caption id=”attachment_4102″ align=”aligncenter” width=”300″ caption=”Libra loves stylish threads and Capricorn loves status symbols. Both love designer labels.

More importantly, they both love order. Libra loves order in the social arena while Capricorn loves order in the business arena. That’s why the Libra Sun/Capricorn Moon pairing is excellent for management as it combines Libra’s social savvy with Capricorn’s business savvy. Libra knows how to keep its employees happy and cooperative while Capricorn knows how to keep them organized and on-task.

Libra Sun, Capricorn Moon: Ambition Never Looked So Fine

Hollywood Golden Era actress Joan Fontaine is a Libra Sun, Capricorn Moon. (Chart) Her rise to the top of the film business is a good example of how to get these two signs working together. Fontaine was a struggling young actress when she managed to sit herself next to producer David O. Selzneck at a dinner party. The two began discussing literature and next thing she knew Selzneck asked her to audition for the film Rebecca. According to Wikipedia, Fontaine then “endured a grueling six-month series of film tests, along with hundreds of other actresses, before securing the part some time before her 22nd birthday.” (Source)

Note how her success resulted in equal parts from who she positioned herself next to at a social gathering (Libra) and her ability to endure a grueling work schedule (Capricorn). She displayed Libra’s ability to charm while dining with the producer, then deployed Capricorn’s ability to grind while out-working the competition. By blending Libra’s social skills with Capricorn’s nose-to-the grindstone mentality, Fontaine was able to invest the stress of a tough Sun/Moon pairing into launching a career that ultimately spanned 54 years. The tension inside between her solar and lunar selves on inside her was probably key to her success within the ultra-competitive environment around her.

Actor Michael Douglas is a Libra Sun, Capricorn Moon well known in Hollywood circles for both his sociability and work ethic. (Chart) His role as the chief executive (Capricorn) seeking an equal partner (Libra) in the 1995 film American President is a nice, if idealized, projection of the Libra/Capricorn square:

Gavin Newsom, the former mayor of San Francisco known as much for his string of relationships as for his support of gay marriage, is also a Libra Sun, Capricorn Moon. (Chart) People with the same Sun/Moon pairing (“Astro-twins”) often bear a impossible to dismiss resemblance to each other even if they’re not related by blood. As a number of commentators have noted, Gavin Newsom bears an impossible to dismiss resemblance to Michael Douglas:

Curiously enough, Newsom’s rise to the top of California politics mirrors Joan Fontaine’s rise to the top of the film business. Newsom’s had to grind as much as any politician but he’s been helped tremendously by the fact his father is best friends with Gordon Getty. Getty, an elite Wall Street magnante, has opened doors for Newsom in much the same way elite Hollywood producer David Selzneck opened doors for Joan Fontaine. (Source) Newsom has also benefitted from a number of relationships with very high profile women. His first wife, Kimberly Guilfoyle, worked her way through law school as a Victoria Secret model while his current wife, Jennifer Siebel, is a well known Hollywood actress. As you can see, there is good reason why astrologer Jefferson Anderson refers to Libra Sun, Capricorn Moon as “The Social Climber”. (Source)

Libra Sun, Capricorn Moon: Machiavellian Mastermind or Icon of Life and Liberty

Speaking of social climbing, each of the 144 Sun/Moon pairings has it’s own dark side. Libra’s dark side is associated with vanity and social positioning while Capricorn’s dark side is associated with ruthless pursuit of status. Imagine a person possessing the instincts of Machiavelli and the wardrobe of Louis Vuitton and you’ll get a sense of this pairing’s modus operandi when it turns to its shadow side. Jefferson Anderson tells us that the Libra Sun, Capricorn Moon native has the potential to become “just another Iago” should they use their skills for selfish purposes. (Source) “Iago” is widely considered to be Shakespeare’s most evil villain, famous for engaging in some of the most ruthless social positioning schemes imaginable. (Source) Disgraced U.S. Army Colonel Oliver North, the Machiavellian mastermind of Iran Contra, is a Libra Sun, Capricorn Moon. (Chart)

Which brings us to a Libra Sun, Capricorn Moon individual who is to Oliver North what matter is to anti-matter. Bobby Seale, founder of the Black Panther Party, is a Libra Sun, Capricorn Moon. (Chart) Most (white)

Ecologically, Libra is the sign of the autumnal equinox, a time of the year when night (black) and day (white) must exist in equal partnership with each other. Capricorn, the sign of the Authority Figure, is ruled by Saturn which in traditional astrological lore is the original agricultural CEO. (Source) Put the two together and you have somebody who can excel at the large scale organization (Capricorn) of legal/social systems (Libra). According to astrologers Suzi and Charles Harvey, the Statue of Liberty is a good metaphoric image for the highest expression of Libra Sun, Capricorn Moon. (Source) Bobby Seale is obviously not the actual Statue of Liberty but he is an icon for life, liberty, and hard-earned happiness, the honest pursuit of which is the highest expression of the Libra/Capricorn pairing.

Mars/Moon Aspects: The Emotional Battleground

Mars/Moon aspects are intensely combative aspects as they combine the emotionality of the Moon with the aggressiveness of Mars. According to astrologer Sue Tompkins, people with Mars/Moon aspects in their chart often grow up in extremely dangerous environments:

The person is usually used to feeling unsafe and is very quick to smell danger and thus cultivates speedy reactions and responses – the kind of reactions that can save lives.

The need to protect the self and more especially one’s family and others with whom there is an emotional bond is usually keenly developed with all Mars/Moon aspects. Not uncommonly, the family was threatened in some way in childhood, if not by anger or violence within the household, then by some threat from outside.

[. . . those with the hard contacts] may continually behave or believe as if World War III is about to break out. (Source)

The album Straight Outta Compton by the pioneering rap group NWA was released (born) August 8th, 1988. A Leo Sun, the album’s Cancer Moon is squared by its Aries Mars. (Chart) Watch the first 90 seconds of the video for the album’s cover song if you’d like to see an intensely vivid example of a very tough Mars/Moon contact:

You’ll find Mars/Moon contacts in people who have been abused, have inflicted abuse, and those who have done both. It will also be found in the charts of journalists who report/document abuse which is essentially what NWA was doing with Straight Outta Compton.

Mars/Moon conjunctions can be a bit easier to handle than Mars/Moon squares but not by much. Consider, for instance, this video of a crowd chasing away four police officers who were brutalizing a streaker far above and beyond what was necessary to subdue him. I ran the chart for the video using its creation date as its date of birth and it includes a Mars/Moon conjunction in early Libra, the sign most associated with the justice system:

The police officers are a stand in for the lowest expression of a Mars/Moon conjunction in Libra: a nasty, brutal, and swift disposition of a form of “justice”. The crowd is a stand in for the highest expression of this aspect: fierce, fast-moving, and highly enterprising in the pursuit of justice. At its best, Mars/Moon in Libra is about fiercely fighting (Mars/Moon) for fairness. Watch the above clip closely and you’ll see that the one officer who admonishes his colleague to stand down at :31-:32 is the only one who manages to get away from the crowd unscathed — which seems a reasonably fair result all things considered.

If the Mars/Moon aspect is in Aries (the sign of warfare), it’s likely to be particularly heated. To illustrate: the latest installment of the Terminator franchise was released (born) on May 21st, 2009. The film’s chart sports a very prominent Mars/Moon conjunction in Aries. (See Chart) In the next clip, the T-600 Terminator is a stand in for the lowest expression of a Mars/Moon conjunction in Aries: nasty, brutal, combative, even murderous. The three humans are stand ins for the highest expression of this aspect: fast-moving, fiercely protective and highly enterprising when coming to the aid of one’s family. On the metaphoric level it’s not too much of a stretch to compare the T-600 to a violently corrupt police force such as the Rampart division of the LAPD. The film’s post-Apocalyptic setting could certainly be analogized an urban war zone like South Central Los Angeles while the three humans are essentially members of a defacto family not all together different from NWA:

Obviously that scene is from the imaginal world of film but people with this aspect in their chart will likely relate to it as a good metaphor for how they experienced childhood. They may not have been fighting a psychopathic cyborg but they likely did live within a home that felt like an emotional battleground.

I recommend the following books:

Sagittarius Sun, Aries Moon: The Philosopher Outlaw of Physical Culture and the Super Crusader of Tree Top Abandon

Sagittarius is the Spiritual Seeker, the Evangelical Gangster, the Philosopher-Prophet, the Professor of High Adventure, and the Super Crusader of Quests and Faith. People with their Sun (identity) in this truth seeking sign will come to be identified with their wide-ranging religious, spiritual, or philosophical pursuits. Symbolized as a Centaur-Archer firing a flaming arrow at a far-off target, Sagittarius is about as uncontrollable as a wild stallion once it has its sights locked on an adversary or possessed by the spirit of a crusade. Actor Samuel Jackson is about as close to a textbook Sagittarius Sun as you’ll find. (Chart) He’s starred in wide range of films but his signature role will always be that of “Jules Winnfield”, the bible quoting philosopher hitman he played to great effect in the 1994 film Pulp Fiction:

Sitting 120 degrees away from Sagittarius is Aries, its fire sign cousin. Aries is the sign of Trailblazer, the Daredevil, the Warrior, the Survivor, the Competitor, the Fighter Jock, the Airborne Ranger, and the Ass-Kicker of the Zodiac. In nature it is associated with the Ram who confronts rivals by ramming its head into them. When a person’s Moon (emotional needs) is in Aries they are emotionally nourished by going head to head against a challenge, the more overwhelming the better. Ronda “Rowdy” Rousey – the trash talking professional cage fighter considered the heir apparent to Gina Carano as “the face of women’s mixed martial arts”, is an Aries Moon. (Chart) If you’re not familiar with Rousey she’s the blonde seen ramming her head into her opponent in the below video:

Combine the raw horse power of the wild stallion (Sagittarius Sun) with the aggressive instincts of the ram (Aries Moon) and you get a Sun/Moon pairing that will be restless, aggressive, impulsive, and bluntly plain spoken. Astrologer Jefferson Anderson emphasizes this pairing’s outsized sense of commitment to speaking its truth, no matter the costs or consequences:

No other combination embodies such candid outspokenness as this one. Dynamic, impulsive, and extremely independent, you lack inhibition and have the courage to say exactly what you feel. You’re forthright and fearless, and things are as you see them – and to hell with what others may think. (Source)

Tyra Banks, the former super model turned outspoken television show host, is a representative Sagittarius Sun, Aries Moon. (Chart) In 2010 she created a near international incident for delivering a philosophically righteous beat down on all those who had called her “fat” simply for sporting a more robust form than in her super model days.

The above incident was called “the slap heard round the world” which seems fitting given Banks’ astrological pedigree. Sagittarius is world traveler of the Zodiac while Aries Moons derive emotional nourishment from getting in fights. Put the two together and you get the Sun/Moon pairing most likely to go on an around the world ass kicking tour.

Speaking of “around the world ass kicking tours”, physical fitness icon Joseph Pilates is also a Sagittarius Sun, Aries Moon. (Chart) Today people think of the Pilates method as something lithe dancer types do but Pilates originally designed the method while confined in the hospital ward of a prisoner of war camp during World War I. A firebrand of physical culture and well ahead of his time, Pilates made it clear to any who would listen that his ideas about health were the “Truth”, end of story.

Sagittarius Sun, Aries Moon: The Super Crusader of Tree Top Abandon (Picture: Joseph Pilates)

Astrologers Suzi and Charles Harvey tell the Sagittarius Sun, Aries Moon individual, “Running large enterprises – whether it is a multi-million business or a large and nosiy family – is probably your cup of tea.” (Source) Banks, already a multi-million dollar super model, is now a student at Harvard Business School. On a similar note, Pilates famously turned his exercise studio in New York into the centerpiece of a worldwide, multi-million dollar global enterprise.

Drug lord Pablo Escobar is also a Sagittarius Sun, Aries Moon who ran a multi-million dollar business that involved around the world ass-beatings, albeit of a slightly different nature than those delivered by Tyra Banks or Joseph Pilates. (Source)

Sagittarius Sun, Aries Moon: “My way or the highway” versus “Rules were made to be broken”

Each of the 144 Sun/Moon pairings has its own dark side. Sagittarius Sun, Aries Moon individuals often have a tendency to run roughshod over more sensitive souls. Their temper tantrums can be near epic, particularly in their younger years. Both Joseph Pilates and Tyra Banks, for instance, have earned reputations as bullish authoritarians who practice the “my way or the highway” philosophy that many Sagittarius Sun, Aries Moon natives subscribe to. To her credit, Banks has stated she is working on being less of a bully. (Source)

At its best this pairing will channel its rebellious “rules were made to be broken” attitude into some endeavor that challenges those status quo attitudes, customs, or institutions in need of a much deserved ass-kicking. Tobacco industry whistleblower Jeffery Wigand, famously portrayed by Russel Crowe in the film The Insider, is a Sagittarius Sun, Aries Moon who invested this pairing’s penchant for delivering wide-ranging (Sagittarius) beatdowns (Aries) into laying the smack down on the tobacco industry. (Chart)

That a Sagittarius Sun, Aries Moon like Jeffrey Wigand would posses the raw courage and crusading spirit necessary to go on an around the world ass-kicking tour against the tobacco industry makes a lot of sense. Using the publication date of the first Tarzan book by author Edgar Rice Burroughs as the character’s date of birth, Tarzan himself – the original around the world ass-kicker – is a Sagittarius Sun, Aries Moon. I recommend the following books:

Taurus Sun, Aries Moon: The Gladiatrix

People with their Suns (identity) in Taurus tend to be identified with their ability to accumulate resources (cash, land), handle material objects (clothes, jewelry), enjoy creature comforts (rich food, fine wine), and bull-like refusal to ever budge or negotiate. Sitting 30 degrees away from Taurus, is Aries, the Trailblazer, the Daredevil, the Warrior, the Survivor, the Competitor, the Ass-Kicker of the Zodiac. In nature it is associated with the Ram who confronts rivals by ramming its head into them. When a person’s Moon (emotional needs) is in Aries they are emotionally nourished by going head to head against a challenge. Pair the territorial nature of a Taurus Sun with aggressive emotions of an Aries Moon and the result is a Sun/Moon combination uniquely suited for gladiatorial combat. In his 1978 book Sun Signs Moon Signs, Jefferson Anderson emphasizes the Taurus Sun, Aries Moon individual’s unwavering approach to life:

On the surface you are calm, self-controlled, and easygoing but that charm masks your passion and determination. Once you set your sights on something, you will pursue it with remarkably unwavering intensity. If anyone should happen to stand in your way – well that is their problem. Your presence alone can be intimidating. (Source)

According to astrologers Sonya Magett and Rob Marriott, Taurus/Aries is the “most gangsta” corner of the zodiac with Taurus correlating to “the money” and Aries “to the muscle”. (Source) ESPN sideline reporter Erin Andrews is a Taurus Sun, Aries Moon whose made a lot of money by muscling her way into the most alpha of alpha male arenas. (Natal Chart) She’s not a literal “gangsta” but she has succeeded in a male dominated industry so dog-eat-dog that a level of mental toughness and situational awareness on par with that of a 1920s Chicago mafioso are required in order to survive.

In Taurus/Aries land Andrews’ line about “We [women] need to look out for each other” translates as “They need to look for each other, I can fend for myself just fine.”

Andrews may look like a model but her psychological profile is more akin to that of a Roman-era gladiator than that of a beauty queen. To illustrate: Using its premier date as its date of birth, the film Gladiator starring Russel Crowe as Roman General Maximus Decimus Meridius is also a Taurus/Aries. (Chart)

While Andrews may never have endured a professional environment quite as barbaric and ruthless what’s depicted in Gladiator, she was on the dance team and did rush a sorority during her time at the University of Florida so she’s likely come close. (Source) As Taurus/Aries native Rabindranath Tagore once said, “Power takes as ingratitude the writhings of the its victims.” (Source)

TMZ recently had a piece on what a “bitch” Andrews is but trust me, given her astrological pedigree being called that phrase has next to no effect on her. As far as the textbook Taurus/Aries female is concerned the b-word stands for “Being In Total Control Of Herself”:

African American leader Malcom X and French revolutionary leader Maximilien Robespierre are both Taurus/Aries natives who demonstrated this pairing’s ability to gladiate their way into their respective cultures’ body politic. Andrews is a sports reporter, not a political leader, so while we certainly can’t put her in the same category as Malcom X or Robespierre she has had to develop an extremely thick skin (Taurus Sun) and aggressive instincts (Aries Moon) in order to survive in her chosen profession.
